We built SchemaDesk. These guides are our honest take on the CRM category, including where we are not the right fit.

Why CLV belongs in CRM buying and ops

Customer lifetime value (CLV or LTV) estimates how much gross profit a customer relationship produces over its life. It informs CAC ceilings, segment focus, and whether a CRM investment in retention tooling is justified.

SchemaDesk publishes this CLV page as a free how-to-calculate guide that will power the calculator tool. Start with a simple model you can explain in one meeting.

CLV formulas that teams actually use

Simple CLV ≈ average gross margin per account per year × average customer lifespan in years. For subscription businesses, CLV ≈ (ARPU × gross margin %) ÷ logo churn rate, when churn is reasonably stable.

Example: $200 monthly ARPU, 70% gross margin, 3% monthly logo churn. Monthly margin = $140. CLV ≈ $140 ÷ 0.03 ≈ $4,667. Keep the time units consistent (all monthly or all annual).

  • Use gross margin, not revenue, when CAC comparisons matter
  • Segment CLV by plan or channel; blends hide the truth
  • Recalculate when pricing or churn regime changes

Inputs to gather

Finance owns margin. RevOps or customer success owns churn and lifespan. Agree on whether expansion revenue is included before you celebrate a large CLV.

  • Average revenue per account (monthly or annual)
  • Gross margin percentage
  • Logo churn or average lifespan
  • Optional: expansion rate if you model net revenue retention
  • CAC by channel for LTV:CAC checks

Worked example

A B2B services firm averages $18,000 revenue per client per year at 55% gross margin ($9,900 margin per year). Clients stay 3.5 years on average. Simple CLV = 9900 × 3.5 = $34,650.

If blended CAC is $7,000, LTV:CAC ≈ 5:1, which usually supports growth spend. If a paid channel shows $20,000 CAC against the same CLV, that channel needs a fix or a cut even if top-line leads look cheap.

CLV improves when retention work is visible in the CRM: renewals, accounts, and the custom objects your success team already tracks. SchemaDesk free buyer guides help you quantify value; the product is ready when you want to implement that model in a workspace.

FAQ

Is LTV the same as CLV?

Teams use the terms interchangeably. Be explicit about gross margin versus revenue and about whether expansion is included.

What LTV:CAC ratio should I target?

Many SaaS teams aim near 3:1 or better after payback constraints. Services and high-touch models differ. Use your cash cycle, not a meme ratio.

Does this SchemaDesk page include a live CLV widget?

It teaches the calculation method as a free buyer guide. Use your finance inputs in a sheet today; the same method will drive the interactive calculator.
