Sales velocity calculator: find how fast pipeline turns into revenue

Sales velocity formula, inputs to gather, a worked example, and how SchemaDesk presents this free calculator-style guide.

We built SchemaDesk. These guides are our honest take on the CRM category, including where we are not the right fit.

What sales velocity measures

Sales velocity estimates how much revenue your pipeline produces per day. It combines opportunity count, average deal value, win rate, and sales cycle length. It is a diagnostic, not a quota promise.

SchemaDesk publishes this as a free how-to-calculate guide that will power the velocity calculator. Get comfortable with the formula before trusting any interactive widget.

Sales velocity formula

Sales velocity = (number of opportunities × average deal value × win rate) ÷ length of sales cycle in days. Win rate is a decimal (0.25 for 25%). Use a consistent time window for all four inputs, usually the last completed quarter.

Improve velocity by raising quality opportunities, increasing average value, lifting win rate, or shortening cycle time. Changing one lever is easier than chasing all four at once.

Inputs to gather

Pull numbers from the CRM or from a cleaned spreadsheet if the CRM data is messy. Garbage inputs create confident nonsense.

  • Qualified opportunities created or active in the period
  • Average closed-won amount (or expected amount if you forecast that way)
  • Win rate for the same stage definition
  • Median or average days from create to close-won
  • Segment filters (SMB vs enterprise) if mixes distort averages

Worked example

A team runs 120 qualified opportunities in a quarter, $8,500 average deal value, 22% win rate, and a 45-day average cycle. Velocity = (120 × 8500 × 0.22) ÷ 45 = $224,400 ÷ 45 ≈ $4,987 of revenue potential per day.

If stage discipline cuts cycle time to 36 days without hurting win rate, velocity rises to about $6,233 per day. That single process change is often worth more than a vanity dashboard.

Using velocity insights in SchemaDesk

Velocity problems usually hide in stage definitions, missing next steps, or objects that do not match the sale. SchemaDesk free buyer guides help you quantify the gap; the product helps teams implement clearer pipelines and follow-ups once they are ready.

FAQ

Should I use median or average cycle length?

Median is often more honest when a few long enterprise deals skew the average. Pick one and keep it consistent across periods.

Can sales velocity replace forecasting?

No. Velocity is a health metric. Forecasting still needs stage probabilities, commit categories, and human judgment.

Does SchemaDesk compute velocity automatically on this page?

This page teaches the method. SchemaDesk publishes it as a free calculator-style guide. Wire your live CRM numbers in a sheet until the interactive tool ships.
